Top 7 Best RC Cars under $200 – relevant in 2018 0 374

There are many types of RC Cars out there, and at varying prices. This makes people confused when trying to get one.

Especially those who don’t really make the difference between a toy and a hobby grade machine.

In this article I’m going to give you a list with my top 7 RC cars in 2018 and enough details about each one to help you decide which is best for you.

Although this list is theoretically a TOP, don’t consider it that way, as every car on the list has something special, and I put it there for a reason. But if you’re too lazy to pick, just get the first one. Problem solved!

My best RC cars under $200

Again, this is a list of my top pics when it comes to their specs and the fun you can have driving them. But it doesn’t really mean they are in a certain order. I recommend you go through each of them and search what interests you most.

Choosing an RC car under the price of $200 seems like a big compromise, especially if you want to get something hobby grade. But fear not, the ones listed bellow handle themselves exceptionally well and some even come with brushless motors, which is a big plus.

What to look for in an RC Car?

If you’re still not experienced enough with RC cars, or this is the first time you considered buying one, don’t worry. The recommendations from my list are mostly RTR (ready to race) and don’t require any special soldering skills or knowledge.

Electric Power vs Gas Power

In this hobby, cars can be mainly powered electrically or with a gas engine. Because gas engine cars are not so beginner friendly and usually cost more money, I won’t have any on this list.

So this is basically a “top 7 electric RC cars list” and now you’re dissapointed because you think you’re compromising, when in fact, that’s not the case.

Gas powered RC Cars

These are pretty much normal gas cars but on a smaller scale. They have carburetors, air filters, clutches, air pistons and so on.

They are also called “nitro engines”

  • Very powerful
  • More controlled engine temperature
  • The sound can be pleasant to some people
  • Are usually more expensive
  • Have more parts that can break

Electric RC Cars

Electric cars, surprising enough, are actually faster than the GAS couterparts.

They can have brushed or brushless motors. Brushless ones being more powerful, yet more expensive.

  • Hold the records for fastest in the world
  • Less parts= less to worry about
  • Way better for beginners
  • Faster acceleration
  • Need to wait for the batteries to charge

Important difference: Brushed vs Brushless

I may repeat myself a lot on this site talking about the difference between Brushled and brushless. I usually talk about drones, but RC cars that work with batteries also run these kinds of motors, so they must still hold some kind of importance.

Brushed motors are less powerful, but are considerably cheaper and brushless motors have more power, can allow the use of more powerful batteries (4 or 5s) and also last longer in time.

Nowadays, brushless motors have become more widely available, so in my list I’ll recommend a few cars that are both cheap and run incredible motors.

Don’t underestimate an RC car just because it has a brushed motor, under the $200 you can find some really speedy cars with good brushed motors.

brushed vs brushless motor stator and rotor

Because Gas powered RC cars are usually more expensive than Electric, in this category “under $200” I’ll only recommend the ones that run with batteries.

They are also much more beginner friendly and have insane acceleration that deliver the maximum amount of fun.

ZD Racing 10423 - the best RC car (my oppinion)

All the cars on this list are incredible, but this is one of my all times favorites, and very new on the market.

It’s a very fast, durable and versatile car that runs an awesome powerful brushless motor and has enough battery for a lot of run time.

Considering the price, it’s incredible we’re getting such a good product.

Oh, did I tell you it’s splash-proof?

  • Running Time: 20 min
  • Battery 7.4V 2400mAh 25C LiPo
  • Running Distance: 200m
  • Max Speed: 50km/h
  • Brushless Motor
  • 4 wheel drive

Positives

  • Very powerful brushless motor
  • Can run both on track and offroad very well
  • High speed (and the breaks work instantly)
  • waterproof motor
  • Great build quality

Negatives

  • you need to connect a buzzer to know when the battery is low voltage

You can get buzzers from here, they are also helpful to check battery voltage anytime and can be easily connected to the Battery balancing port.

My video Review and more

Bellow there’s a video review I did on this drone. It’s the successor of the first ZD racing thunder that was very similar to this, but didn’t have the waterproof motor. And that one I broke by driving through water, so it seems to be a pretty important feature.

This car comes with a pretty solid frame that has metal insertions and the suspension is top notch. Thanks to the powerful brushless motor it can handle additional weight and even go on steep hills and do some off-road.

The platform is quire high up the ground, so it won’t get stuck between rocks, yet the wheels are gripping the road pretty well too, so this works for races any day.

Just watch the video bellow to see how fast this can go though snow!

The transmitter is very responsive and high quality for the price.

It has trimming knobs and even a third channel switch, in case you’ll want to add a horn, lights or anything frankly in the future.

Conclusion

A stable RC car with brushless motors and amazing acceleration. Perfect for both types of terrain.

FEIYUE FY06 - 6 Wheel Drive RC car under $200

This car has something special of its own. That is an insane ability to climb even the steepest mountains.

The 6 wheel drive makes this perfect for off road terrain and going over difficult areas. And guess what, it has a powerful brushless motor and a huge battery.

I like it a lot, especially since it’s even cheaper than the ZD Thunder we talked about earlier.

I found the build quality of the transmitter not to be the best, but it has a nice feature for left-handed people.

  • Running Time: 25 min
  • Battery 7.4V 3000mAh
  • Running Distance: 200m
  • Max Speed: 50km/h
  • Brushless Motor
  • 6 wheel drive

Positives

  • Very Fast and stable
  • 6 wheel drive is perfect for hard terrain and off-road
  • has transmitter mode for left-handed people
  • powerful brushless motor
  • Long battery life

Negatives

  • the controller doesn't feel that high quality
  • it doesn't brake instantly (for break drifting) - minor inconvenience of mine

FEIYUE FY06 video Review

In this video review I show you how cool this rc car looks in slow motion while doing drifts on rough terrain.

The FY06 is very popular currently and it’s probably because of its rare 6 wheel format and how cool the suspension behave on bumpy roads.

The transmitter looks good, but the trigger feels a little clumsy sometimes and the stirring wheel feels lower quality than the previously mentioned ZD Thunder, for example.

There is a mode for children that limits the speed considerably(you can change it anytime with a key, though).

And what’s nice about it is that you can send the stirring wheel from one side to the other if you’re left-handed for better control.

Conclusion

I totally recommend getting this 6 wheel monster! It's a lot of fun to play with and great for both off road and drifting.

HBX Survivor - Stable and powerful monster RC car

This is a real RC monster truck that can deliver a ton of fun with brushless motor for around $100.

Yes, way bellow $200 with very good specs and big wheels. That’s why it’s one of my top favorites on this list.

For this price to be achieved with good quality components, some material quality compromises have been made, such as a cheaper plastic on the transmitter and mostly plastic servos on the car.

However, it feels and drive pretty good and doesn’t have any issues with off road terrain either.

Overall this is a speedy and very stable monster truck that can go over difficult terrain easily.

  • Running Time: 10 min
  • Battery 7.4V 1500mAh LiIon
  • Running Distance: 80m
  • Max Speed: 40km/h
  • Brushless Motor
  • 4 wheel drive

Positives

  • Very Fast and stable
  • has clear windows (adds to the realism of the car)
  • tires are big and the rubber is pretty soft and can grip the ground well
  • powerful brushless motor
  • LiIon batteries are safer to use and way cheaper to replace

Negatives

  • the controller doesn't feel that high quality
  • The battery life isn't that great

The cheapest brushless RC car!

This had to make it on my list even if only for the fact that it’s a working brushless RC car that’s around $100.

If you didn’t yet know, brushless motors are more expensive than normal ones, yet more powerful and durable.

It comes with 2 1500 mAh 3.7v Lithium Ion batteries, unlike most of the RC cars of today, that run Lipo. This means a little less power for the motors, but they are cheaper and easier to charge and replace. They are also much more safe for beginners and kids (don’t have a risk to explode).

The battery life isn’t that great, but it’s enough to have some fun, if you buy a few aditional batteries, you’ll be fine, especially considering how cheap they are.

The PVC cover is very stylish in my opinion and pretty thick compared to others.

Conclusion

If you have a strict budget, don't hesitate to buy this beauty. It has most things you'll want in an RC car and you can go buy more cheap batteries any time.

WLtoys A 959 - 70 km/h for under $60?

I know that speed might seem like an exageration to you, but when you’ll actually get this little buggy you’re totally going to be impressed.

This one doesn’t have a brushless motor and that’s why it’s so cheap.

It might actually not go to 70 km/h, but it’s pretty damn close. All my friends were stunned by how fast this little thing can go.

It almost is uncontrollably fast!

The suspensions work great and the drifts you can do with it are simply insane.

  • Running Time: 14 min
  • Battery 7.4V 1100mAh Lipo
  • Running Distance: 40m
  • Max Speed: 9999km/h
  • Brushed Motor
  • 4 wheel drive

Positives

  • Incredibly fast considering it has brushed motor
  • Is extremely fun to do drifts with
  • it's small an fits easily in a backpack (unlike most on this list)
  • Did I mention FAST?
  • Super good price for the quality

Negatives

  • The range is very limited to about 40m
  • Can be hard to control when going really fast

Best Rc buggy under $100!

Yes, in my experience, this is totally the most fun I’ve had with an RC car at this price. And what other reason would you buy it for except having tons of quality fun.

I can see the grins on my friends when I give them this car to play with.

It has a great size, so it doesn’t occupy a lot of space in you house and you can easily carry it.

And the battery life is also good, but I’m not so excited about its range. It can go up to about 40m or so, but after that it loses signal and the controls get messed up. I wish it would have a few more meters of range at least, especially considering how fast it can travel.

Oh, and did I mention it seems pretty much water-proof from my tests? I don’t know how it survived everything that I put it through!

Conclusion

There's simply no other way to describe this as pure fun on 4 wheel drive. Super fun, very fast and simply one I'll be keeping for myself.

ZD Racing 10421 - Insane buggy brushless car!

Another ZD Racing car, and I swear to God this company is not paying me.

I just love this model because it’s pretty much the model that’s on the first spot, but with a buggy profile, much closer to the ground and designed for racing.

I put it lower on my favorites list just because it’s less suited for off-road racing and that’s one of my favorite environments.

However, this has ALL the good things I mentioned my favorite car has! I’m talking brushless motor, great ESC and good battery life.

  • Running Time: 25 min
  • Battery 7.4V 2400mAh LiIon
  • Running Distance: 200m
  • Max Speed: 70km/h
  • Brushless Motor
  • 4 wheel drive

Positives

  • Very fast
  • Pretty stable
  • Great for track and roads
  • Smaller size can fit in backpack
  • Super good price for the quality

Negatives

  • Doesn't do really well on off road terrain

Fastest Cheap Brushless Buggy

The speed this thing has is also pretty insane, and that’s probably because of it’s down to the ground format, compared to it’s brother on the first spot. This does come with the disadvantage of not doing so well off-road, but there’s a lot of fun to be had with this.

Again, ZD Racing impresses me with their addition of a great brushless motor and high amp esc on such a cheap device under $200.

Watch bellow how fast and stable this RC car really is:

Conclusion

If you're looking for a brushless buggy under $200, this is it. Perfect for roads and even rougher terrain, but not real offroad. Very high quality and super speedy.

Eachine RatingKing F14 - FPV cam on an RC car!

I know many of you think that you can add an FPV cam to a car anytime, but it can be quite a hassle for a beginner, especially.

This is why I picked this car for my list, as it already comes with a great FPV camera and it Ready To Race!

This is going to completely transform your driving experience and everything is going to become much more fun!

And what’s awesome is that you can get this with the camer in a package and also fit a pair of FPV Goggles in the same price!

  • Running Time: 15 min
  • Battery 7.4V 1500mAh Lipo
  • Running Distance: 200m
  • Max Speed: 35km/h
  • Brushed Motor
  • 4 wheel drive

Positives

  • Included FPV Camera
  • Included HD camera that can record on Micro SD
  • Great Receiver signal
  • Solid build with metal parts
  • You're getting rechargeable batteries for the transmitter

Negatives

  • Doesn't do really well on off-road terrain

FPV Ready To Race RC car!

I’m frankly starting to rething the position of this car on my list. This is exactly why I told you in the beginning that I can’t really decide for an order.

This car package not only is well under $200, but it also comes with 2 different types of cameras!

One is FPV low latency CCD camera, which is better for First Person View than a standard CMOS one.

The other one being the 720p recording cam that does an incredible job by itself so you can make videos and post them online or send them to your friends.

A pleasant surprise is that the quality of this car is not half bad. It has some durable palstic mixed with  steel dogbones and steel axels, which will make it more durable.

And yet another pleasant surprise from this company is that you’re getting 4 pieces NiMh batteries for the transmitter that are also rechargeable.

Here’s a video showing how much fun you can have with such a cheap car!

Conclusion

This car comes with a lot to offer for a very small price. If you want the fun of FPV on a cheap RC car, this is the way to go!

Tamiya TT02 - build it as you please!

This one is not so beginner-oriented, but it’s still one of the most recommended ones online from people who know what they are talking about.

The Tamiya is basically a kit for a car that comes in many different looks and capabilities.

From Racing kit to Drifting kit with all kinds of cool canopies that you can find on amazon.

It will require assembly from your part, but the quality of this car is outstanding and it’s going to be very fun to do it.

This car is used even in racing competitions and is super stable and responsive overall.

It’s so low on my list because it’s a kit and not a Ready To Race car.

  • Running Time: 15 min
  • Battery 7.4V 1500mAh Lipo
  • Running Distance: 200m
  • Max Speed: 40km/h
  • Brushed Motor
  • 4 wheel drive

Positives

  • A lot to customise
  • A ton of models to choose from
  • Very good quality build
  • Big online community that can help
  • Slick profile for road racing

Negatives

  • Has a learning curve
  • Very low profile, can only use on road.

Tamiya TT2 - legendary car!

Firs of all,  you should have a look at the building process before you think to buy it.

It’s going to be a lot of fun to build it and you’re going to feel very accomplished at the end. You don’t have to be an ingineer to do it.Think of it as furniture assembly.

The handling for this car is absolutely amazing and that’s why many people think of it as being one of the best cars under $200.

Here’s a video with a kit specially made for drifting:

This list of my favorite 7 best RC cars under $200 was destined mostly to beginners, but strangely enough you’ll find that they are very capable machines, able to impress even long term hobbyists.

The list is going to be updates as new models appear and it’s recently been put toghether in 2018.
