Interview: Mr. Steele and Chad Nowak about the Dubai World Drone Prix

As most of you know, the World Drone Prix was recently held in Dubai and it featured a 1 million dollar total cash prize. The participants were selected by sending a personal clip of their flight.

Two of the most popular and charismatic guys around have made it really high in the rankings. They're Chad Nowak and Steele Davis from the Riot Rotor crew.

Chad Nowak

Our favorite Australian racer and a connoisseur of the art of flying.

You can watch more of his videos on FinalGlideAus youtube or on his facebook page.

The interview

Let's start with the basics: Can you guys tell me what was your build for the speed race and for the freestyle race?

For the race I was under the impression that we were suppose to be running a 7Km track.

So I built:When I landed in Dubai on Friday March 4th Running a 4S 2200. I could get about 7-8 minutes of flight time cruising so for the 10-12 minute track I only had to make one pit stop battery change.

Now, could you tell me please what places did you get in the overall ranking for all the races?

Not sure about what position I came as they didn't get specific out side the top 4. I placed 3rd in qualifying, won my top 32 race and was leading my top 16 race before clipping a gate, breaking a prop and not being able to continue.Freestyle I came 4th but the music I used was cut after only 30 seconds which disrupted my routine.

I spent 0$. The only money I spent out of my own pocket to prepare for Dubai was about 300$ on wall adaptors for my phone and computer and then a huge 130L piece of luggage. All the costs were covered by our sponsors and Rotor Riot.

Who was your favorite racer, both in speed and freestyle (besides yourselves, haha)?

Hahaha "besides myself ". What an arrogant dick that guy, Lol. Umm I really like Ethan Gulnac. Aka a 15 year old from HAWAII.

I was keen to race with Luke. I've always known he was fast as I have been friends with him online for a while and mentored him in some areas like the physiological side of racing last year when he first started competing. I was very pleased to see him do well at Dubai.
Chad Nowak
Finalglideaus
"do well" might be an understatement lol. He got big media coverage thanks to his win.

I always live by the rule that when someone wins just know they had both skill and luck on their side, but so did you if you win, so be understanding when someone else wins yet be humble when you do.
Chad Nowak

Chad Nowak: be understanding when someone else wins yet be humble when you do.

You're an incurable philosopher! And we love it! I must say I was pretty surprised when Luke, the 15 year old guy won the competition. Kudos to him!

Other than that Stingersswarm aka Kevin Doughtry. And, yes, Luke is a great pilot. I life Skitzo too. Love*

Having someone that is as passionate about something as you are close by is amazing. And he's a really cool dude. So yeah. Without him I wouldn't be in the position I am today

You might want to take a break before reading the final question…

How did the Dubai experience affect you and what do you have in plan for the future?
portrait-paul-archer
Paul Archer
Chief Gator
I was very impressed with how the race panned out and hope to work with the organizers to make next year even more impressive. I think quad racing is alive and well. My plan now is a few weeks off and then planning for future Rotor Riot episodes.
Chad Nowak
Finalglideaus
The event was epic. It had some issues, but this industry is in its teething stages it only gets better from this point on. In the future I plan on expanding the hobby in many ways, through Rotor Riot and through attending as many world wide events as I can. I think there is a European Rotor Riot Tour coming up very soon so we will see what that brings to the table.

Mr Steele
Wow, can't wait for that! Many thanks to both of you for taking your time to talk to me and my audience. Let's hope more and more people will discover this beautiful hobby with its bells and whistles!

How do you make money with your drone, though?

Okay, so you got your new and fancy drone, but how do you stand out from any dad out there who has the same drone and watched some tutorials online?

I did exactly that and barely had any success.

But now I’m charging 5x as much as before and even have to refuse clients from time to time.

I even bought about 7 online courses… and I didn’t make much progress.

So how did I finally make it to this level?

If you want the short answer, I learned everything from this guy Alex, who’s making $200 per hour with his drone. And he’s even teaching exactly how to do that.

This is pretty much what you need to know:

how-to-make-money-with-drones

1. Make sure you have a proper drone.

If you have any of the latest DJI Drones, like the Mavic Air 2, for example, you’re ready to start making money.

No need to overthink this, but if it’s any help, check this comparison of the best camera drones compared in 2020.

types of drones

2.Learn how to create the best content to stand out

You won’t stand out from the next dad who bought a DJI drone for Cristmass in the eyes of your clients if you don’t do this.

It’s WAY more important to know what you’re doing than the gear you have.

You’ll need to learn and master the following:

  1.
  • Flying your drone(to stand out from people with basic drone shots)
  • Preparing for the flight and weather in advance
  • Learn the best drone settings (you need a proper setup template)
  • Create the Video Script (it's way easier if you know what to shoot)
  • Have a set of great cinematic shots you know how to do
  • Know how to edit the video so it stands out
  • Learn how to color grade

This is why you HAVE to invest in a proper way to learn things (instead of watching tutorials here and there).

3.Find clients that pay 5x more than regular

But not so fast.

You won’t make a penny if you don’t know how to find your clients.

I have struggled finding clients even when my videos were getting pretty good.

Until I learned a few tricks and how to find and approach them so they won’t be able to say no.

And what’s best, I learned how to get the price I asked for.

How can you do the same?

I have tested quite a few courses online and watched tons of videos on youtube, but frankly, I have learned more from one single course than from everything else… and all that in like a weekend.

Made back the money from this investment in myself in a single week and then much more.

How do I learn all of this? From youtube?

You could simply go online and learn everything in terms of video from youtube, forums, facebook groups etc.

However, let me tell you, it’s the worst way to learn all of this(and the slowest).

You won’t have a Complete Step By step guide on how to do everything.

I found myself frustrated, even after I learned how to do most of the video stuff that I still lacked some knowledge and I didn’t know why my shots weren’t standing out.

I got some general promotion ideas from some articles online, but again… I didn’t have much success and was charging too little for my time.

This is exactly where I learned how to make $200 per hour with my drone (From A to Z)

This course is hold by Alex Harris, who’s an international video creator, director, and drone operator with tons of experience.

And I had a great time stealing his know-how(and greatly profited from it, lol).

I recommend you watch his video presentation bellow and check out the course sales page. It’s quite cheap, considering you’re getting 320+ minutes of everything you need to know, step by step and 80+ minutes on how to actually find the ideal clients for you.

I'm a big drone enthusiast, the owner of DronesGator.com and I also make weekly videos on my drone YouTube channel.
