The $200 price gap between them is less interesting than the gap in what they do. These drones answer different questions: the Mini 5 Pro answers "what does the world look like from up there?" The HoverAir answers "what do I look like doing this?"

The HoverAir at $699 is $200 cheaper than the Mini 5 Pro at $899 (grey-market US price). If you buy the Mini 5 Pro through official channels outside the US, it's typically $729-773 for the base kit.
Neither price tells the full story. The Mini 5 Pro includes a controller. The HoverAir's Beacon remote is $180+ extra, bringing the HoverAir's fully-equipped cost close to the Mini 5 Pro's.
The Mini 5 Pro comes with 42GB of internal storage. The HoverAir has 64GB internal plus a microSD slot. Both are generous.
Battery cost comparison: a Mini 5 Pro battery gives 28+ minutes of real flight. A HoverAir battery gives 11-13 minutes.
To match the Mini 5 Pro's single-battery airtime, you need three HoverAir batteries ($150 extra). The per-minute cost of HoverAir flight time is roughly triple.

In good light, the difference is subtle. In low light, at golden hour, or in high-contrast scenes, the Mini 5 Pro pulls more detail from shadows and holds highlights better.
Resolution goes to the HoverAir on paper, but resolution is not the same as image quality.
The Mini 5 Pro's larger sensor, 3-axis gimbal, and D-Log M produce footage that is easier to work with in post-production.
Obstacle Avoidance and Safety
The Mini 5 Pro has omnidirectional visual sensors plus LiDAR, which works in complete darkness. The HoverAir has rear and side sensors only.
The safety gap between these two drones is the largest of any comparison on our site. The Mini 5 Pro also has full GPS with return-to-home. The HoverAir has no GPS.

The HoverAir gives you full autonomy with optional manual control via the Beacon remote. The HoverAir is pocket-sized at 105x149mm folded. The Mini 5 Pro needs a small bag.
Choose the DJI Mini 5 Pro if:
- Image quality is your top priority and you want the best camera under 250g
- Landscape, travel, real estate, or cinematic footage is your goal
- LiDAR obstacle avoidance and GPS safety features matter
- You need 28+ minute flight sessions
- D-Log M and professional color grading are part of your workflow
- You are outside the US or comfortable with grey-market import risk
Choose the HoverAir X1 Pro Max if:
- You want autonomous footage of yourself during sports or activities
- Cycling, skiing, running, or action sports are the primary filming scenarios
- 8K resolution and 4K/120fps slow-mo for social media matter more than Log profiles
- You need a pocket-sized drone that launches from your palm
- Zero setup time matters (no controller, no app required)
- You are in the US and want something you can buy with normal warranty expectations
Our Verdict
For traditional drone photography and videography, the Mini 5 Pro is the better machine by a wide margin. The 1-inch sensor, LiDAR, 3-axis gimbal, GPS, and 28-minute flight time give you tools the HoverAir simply does not have. For action footage of yourself, the HoverAir is the better tool. The Mini 5 Pro cannot launch from your palm, track you at 42 km/h through a cycling route, and film autonomously without a controller in the same seamless way. You could set up ActiveTrack on the Mini 5 Pro, but it requires a controller, setup time, and someone to manage the shot. If you could only buy one drone, buy the Mini 5 Pro (or Mini 4 Pro if you're in the US). It covers more use cases. If you already have a traditional camera drone and want something for action self-filming, the HoverAir fills a gap no traditional camera drone covers. The HoverAir's one unavoidable advantage for US buyers: you can actually buy it with a normal warranty. The Mini 5 Pro cannot be purchased through official US channels.
