Essential Drone Accessories: What You Actually Need

Most drones ship with the bare essentials: the drone, controller, one battery, and a charging cable. To get the most out of your flights, a few key accessories make a real difference in image quality, convenience, and safety.

Must-Have Accessories for Every Drone Pilot

  • Extra batteries: Most drones get 25-35 minutes per charge. Two extra batteries keep you flying for over an hour without long breaks.
  • MicroSD card: A fast, reliable card prevents dropped frames in 4K. Look for V30 or UHS-I at minimum for DJI drones.
  • ND filters: Essential for cinematic video. They control exposure so you can use the 180-degree shutter rule for natural motion blur.
  • Carrying case or backpack: Protects your gear in transit. Especially important for travel drones and multi-battery kits.
Tip: Buy accessories specific to your drone model when possible. Universal ND filters and cases exist, but model-specific ones fit better and cause fewer compatibility issues.

Safety and Compliance Gear

Anti-collision strobe lights are required for night flying under FAA rules, and recommended anytime for visibility. Drone trackers (like AirTag mounts) help recover a downed drone in tall grass or water. Landing pads give you a clean takeoff surface and help with precision landing sensors.

FPV and Simulation

FPV goggles open up an immersive flying experience, especially with DJI's Avata or custom-built quads. If you are new to FPV, a flight simulator is the cheapest way to build muscle memory before risking a real drone. Most simulators support standard transmitters and cost under $30.
