The 250-gram threshold is one of the most important factors in the drone buying decision. In the United States, drones under 250g are exempt from FAA registration for recreational use. This also simplifies regulations in many other countries.
Note: Sub-250g drones like the DJI Mini 4 Pro, DJI Flip, and Potensic Atom SE do not require FAA registration for recreational use. This reduces paperwork and saves $5 in registration fees every 3 years.
The trade-off is that sub-250g drones typically have smaller sensors, shorter flight times, and less wind resistance than heavier models. However, recent models like the DJI Mini 4 Pro have narrowed this gap dramatically, offering 4K video, obstacle avoidance, and 30+ minute flight times in a sub-250g package.
If you plan to travel frequently with your drone, the compact size and registration-free convenience of a sub-250g model is hard to beat. If you need the absolute best image quality or plan to fly in windier conditions, a heavier drone in the 700-900g class is worth the extra weight and registration.
