Not every accessory is essential. Here is what you actually need versus what is nice to have:

Must-Have Accessories

• Extra batteries: Double or triple your flight time. This is the most important accessory purchase.
• MicroSD card: 128GB minimum for 4K video. A fast V30 or U3 rated card prevents dropped frames.
• Carrying case: Protects your investment during transport. Some drones come with a basic case in combo packages.

Recommended Accessories

• ND filter set: Essential for video. Reduces light for proper shutter speed following the 180-degree rule.
• Spare propellers: Cheap insurance against crashes. Keep a set in your bag at all times.
• Landing pad: Prevents dust and debris from damaging motors and sensors during takeoff and landing.

The regulatory costs of drone ownership depend on your drone's weight and how you plan to use it. Recreational pilots with a sub-250g drone can skip registration entirely.

For commercial use (earning money from drone work), you need a Part 107 Remote Pilot Certificate. The knowledge test costs $175, administered at FAA-approved testing centers across the country. The certificate is valid for 24 months before you need to take a recurrent exam.

The smartest way to save on accessories is to buy a "Fly More Combo" bundle from the manufacturer. These typically include 2-3 batteries, a carrying case, and sometimes ND filters at a 15-25% discount compared to buying everything separately.
